Del. WWII veteran gets Purple Heart

MIDDLETOWN, Del. (AP) - July 11, 2008 Because Nick Swyka refused to go to an aid station, his wounds were never officially acknowledged. But on Thursday, Swyka received the medal at the Delaware National Guard's Nelson Readiness Center in Middletown.

His family began pursuing a medal for Swyka eight years ago, but the application was denied twice.

But a three-star general got involved and helped speed up the process and they learned a month ago that Swyka would receive the award.
