Officer critical in Spring Garden collision

SPRING GARDEN - August 26, 2008 The crash happened at about 1:15 this morning near the intersection of Broad and Spring Garden Streets in the city's Spring Garden section.

Officer Christopher Simone, a 7-year veteran for the 9th district, was responding to an assist call at Hahnemann Hospital. That's where security guards said a man had a knife. It was in the response that a car struck Simone's cruiser, injuring three women inside.

Simone was trapped and had to be extricated from the cruiser. He was taken to Hahnemann in critical condition, suffering from fractured ribs and a head injury. The 3 civilians injured were also taken to Hahnemann with non-life threatening injuries.

Despite the severity of his injuries, doctors say the officer's prognosis is good.

Officials are continuing their investigation.
