Overnight fire leaves many homeless

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - August 31, 2008 Before firefighters got the upper hand, three homes were damaged and 16 people were left homeless.

The blaze broke out and quickly spread to homes on both sides of the dwelling before crews took control of the fire at 12:15 a.m.

5 people lived in the original home where the fire broke out, 6 people lived at an adjacent home, and 5 lived at another affected home.

Firefighters rescued 3 people from the building, including a handicapped person. A total of four residents were taken to Temple University Hospital for smoke inhalation. A 9-year-old boy also received medical attention, receiving treatment at the scene for smoke inhalation.

There is no word yet on a cause.
