Hundreds of dead birds found in NJ county

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - January 26, 2009

But exactly why it's happening remains a mystery.

Residents say the birds have been found in the southern part of Franklin Township.

Andrea Kipec, who claims she's counted more than 150 dead birds on her property, says local officials told her it's her responsibility to clean them up.

But she says many residents don't want to come in contact with the birds.

Kipec says local police told her they had received an e-mail from federal Agriculture officials about a program to poison blackbirds and starlings.

But that couldn't be confirmed yesterday, as messages left for state and federal wildlife officials were not returned.
