8-year-old saves family from crashing

WEST READING, Pa. - February 18, 2009 8-year-old Felix Pepin is crazy about his mommy. "I love her 100-percent or even more," Felix said. It was that love that fueled an act of heroism that potentially saved his life, his mom's life, and the life of his then-unborn brother. Two weeks ago, Felix's mom Dahianara Sanchez, a diabetic, was driving him through West Reading when her blood sugar dropped dangerously low. "All of a sudden my vision started going a little bit flaky and I told Felix, 'I'm losing my vision,'" Dahianara said. With Dahianara unable to see, and semi-coherent, her car was still travelling down Penn Street. That's when Felix took over, giving his mom verbal driving instructions. "I told her which lane to go in and which lane not to go in," Felix said. The vehicle travelled several blocks before Felix found a spot to pull over and helped his mom steer the car into an open space on the side of the road. That's when Dihianara finally blacked out. "I put the car in park and I took my mom's phone and dialed 911," Felix said. Dahianara was treated and releases, but went back to the hospital a few days later to give birth to baby Adrian. And now Felix is being hailed a hero. "Realizing we would have been dead if he wasn't the car with me at that point, I am extremely proud," Dahianara said. For Felix's heroism he receives a brand new basketball toy and a dinner at his favorite restaurant Chili's. When asked how it feels to be a hero, Felix replied it was scary at first, but now it makes him feel happy.
