Two dead in Mays Landing fire

MAYS LANDING, N.J. - March 4, 2009 - The 2-alarm fire in a home on Laydon Court in May's Landing was reported at about 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. A witness told Action News she saw the second floor windows blow out followed by smoke. About 50 firefighters battled the blaze.

The flames were brought under control in about 45 minutes, but tragically two people died.

Their identities have not been released.

As night fell, the search for the cause of what's believed to be a suspicious fire continued, conducted by investigators form the Atlantic County Major Crimes and Arson units.

Neighbors Action News spoke with say the home was occupied by a couple and five children and that they had just moved in a few weeks ago.

Fire officials say the blaze appeared to start in a second floor loft area.

As for the exact cause, that is still very much under investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office and Fire Marshall.
