Worker dies in apparent suicide by cop

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - March 6, 2009 Despondent coworkers gathered outside PGW headquarters Friday night.

Their longtime friend, 42-year-old Juan Delgado, lay dead on the roof.

He left his post as dispatch supervisor earlier in the evening and went to the roof.

That's when he started sending suicidal texts to his brother and his friend Juan Flores.

"I came here for that purpose and I got here too late," Flores said.

Police say Delgado's brother helped them look for him; they found him sitting on the roof.

"Stood up, pulled a handgun from between his legs, and raised it up towards the police; police told the male several times to drop the weapon," Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police said.

Delgado did not drop the weapon and police fired.

Coworkers say Delgado just told them earlier in the day he had been diagnosed with bone cancer.

His bosses say he was a solid, dependable guy for 20 years.

"No one saw this coming. I just spoke to him yesterday and he was the one we all know. He was a great guy," PGW C.O.O. Craig White said.
