Car hits pole, bursts into flames

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - April 3, 2009

Police say at about 2:30 Friday morning, the car was speeding when it went out of control on the 2200 block of Westmoreland Street and smacked into a utility pole.

The vehicle then ricocheted off that pole and plowed head-on into another pole.

That's when the car ignited.

Medics took the driver to the hospital with a range of injuries.

A passenger was also in the car.

Police took him in, because they say he was also visibly drunk.

When the driver is released from the hospital, he will be charged with driving under the influence.
