More than three dozen roosters were seized from an auto repair garage in North Philadelphia Monday afternoon after the SPCA says it busted a cockfighting ring. The owner of the garage, Jose Rivera, 52, has been arrested on animal fighting charges.

Investigators say it all began on Sunday, when the fire department was called out for a small fire in a garage on the lot at 2944 North Marshall Street.

Firefighters found the roosters in a garage. Some were roaming freely, the SPCA says, while some others were contained.

The SPCA obtained a warrant, and entered the property Monday afternoon.

In addition to the roosters, the agents say they found a fighting ring and fighting paraphernalia.

Monday evening, Rivera told Action News that police have it all wrong. He says the birds weren't for fighting, but for food.

"I'm cooking. I make soup in there. I don't fight," Rivera said.

The SPCA says the roosters will be euthanized, while the hens and chicks that were found will go up for adoption.
