Explosion at sewer plant injures 1

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. - April 18, 2009 Around 11:30 a.m., some type of explosion went off, injuring one person in the process. The explosion and subsequent fire caused an immediate HAZMAT situation by releasing methane gas.

The person suffered severe burns. There is no word on what cause the explosion.

Phoenixville police officers transported the victim to the hospital. The victim was conscious when taken to the local hospital.

Two officers and a third from a neighboring hospital had to be decontaminated at a local hospital, which shut the emergency room for two hours.

Several roads have been closed adjacent to the sewer plant.

The incident remains under investigation by Phoenixville Fire Department and Chester County fire marshal's office.

Some 60 firefighters responded to the incident.
