Going north the hard way

CHICAGO (AP) - April 27, 2009

The two are believed to be the first Americans to get to the top of the world entirely on their own.

They reached the North Pole Saturday, according to a spokesman for Chicago-based Forward Expeditions.

The group says the men skied, snowshoed and even swam over 54 days.

The two men pulled sleds carrying more than 650 pounds of gear on the trek.

Each man reports losing about 30 pounds.
