Sources: Obama to seek $17B in budget savings

WASHINGTON (AP) - May 6, 2009 Some of the cuts in President Barack Obama's budget are sure to rankle lawmakers, such as the elimination of a program that gives money to states to help defray the cost of incarcerating illegal immigrants who commit crimes. President George W. Bush tried and failed to kill the $400 million subsidy.

A House Democratic official says about half the savings would come from the Pentagon budget, while the other half would come from domestic programs.

The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity to discuss the detailed 2010 budget being made public on Thursday.
