Flyers Richards, Briere recovering from injuries

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - May 20, 2009 Richards had surgery on his left shoulder last week and on his right shoulder last month after playing through the season in pain. He said Wednesday he's sore and sleeping with two shoulder braces.

"I can't really lift anything right now," he said. "I'm up in the gym just working with some small 2-pound weights and stuff like that just trying to get my strength back."

Richards' shoulders bothered him since training camp and he used anti-inflammatory medication to manage the pain. He had 30 goals

and 80 points this season in helping the Flyers reach the playoffs. Richards said he will continue his rehab when he heads home in June to Ontario. Flyers trainer Jimmy McCrossin will also spend time in Canada to work with the recovering center.

Briere had a procedure called photorefractive keratectomy done because his contact lenses bothered him at times during the season.

"Everything went well," Briere said. "My eyes are a little sensitive to the light."

Briere had 11 goals and 14 assists in 29 games for the Flyers last season. He sat out 53 games with a groin injury.
