Children hurt after NY collapse

NEW YORK - May 22, 2009 - Fire officials say 29 of the students at the Yeshiva Shaare Torah in Brooklyn were taken to hospitals. One girl suffered serious bone fractures.

The grating covered a large, below-ground window well in front of the school. Officials say the students, all girls aged 10 to 14, were lined up on the grate for picture day. They fell about 12 feet to the bottom of the window well.

The cause of the Friday morning collapse is under investigation.

The school is ultra-Orthodox Jewish with about 260 students in grades one through eight.

School officials declined to comment.
