In previous years, organizers for the event in Red Bank offset costs through corporate sponsorships, the sale of premium tickets and other fundraising.
But Peter Reinhart says the economic slowdown has reduced the number of sponsorships. He estimates the July 3 event is about 25 percent short of the estimated $200,000 cost to put on the display.
Spectators will be asked to donate.
Organizers also are selling tickets for preferred seating.
