Fortunately, you don't need a Hollywood bank account here.
Surf Shop owner Larry Friedel says surfing is a relatively cheap summer sport, especially compared to golf or tennis.
"There's no court costs or membership fees, and if you buy used, you save a lot of money, " Friedel says. "And you can use the equipment over and over again and there's a resale on it. "
Spring wetsuits, which you may need until mid-summer in our area, sell new for about $75. But here, you can buy used suits for $20 to $40.
And the shop sells used boards, also at considerable savings. Softboards are good for beginners.
"The new softboards start at $175, up to $275. We do sell used equipment for $75 to $150," Friedel says.
More advanced surfers use hardboards -- which can sell for $500 to $1000 each.
"The trick is find a good used one and used prices are from $200 to $500. But if you can find one for $250, you can use if for two to three years and still get $200 back when you trade it in," according to Friedel.
The surf shop gives trade-in credits to people who want to upgrade their boards. And they offer lessons for novices. They say one $35 lesson is all most people need.
