NJ police dog died in a vehicle

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. - July 9, 2009 Patton was a 5-year-old explosive-detecting golden retriever assigned to the Mount Holly Police Department about three years ago. The dog was also on a State Police task force.

Police Chief Steven Martin says the dog died in a vehicle, but how long he was there and how he died were not clear. It's also not clear whether it was a police vehicle.

SPCA spokesman Matt Stanton says the police department asked his agency to look into the death.

Martin said the department is cooperating with the investigation.
