Acme contract dispute continues

he clock is ticking on a possible work stoppage at Acme supermarkets. There are 4,500 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776 who have been working without a contract for the last 18 months.

Two weeks ago Acme said its last, best offer would take effect at midnight Thursday night.

The union has rejected that offer over pension and health benefits.

If Acme does implement the contract, the union said it could authorize a walkout Friday.
