Election set to fill Pa. Senate vacancy

Voters will pick a successor to eastern Pennsylvania state Sen. Rob Wonderling during a Sept. 29 special election. Republican Lt. Gov. Joe Scarnati announced the date Thursday, and the state Democratic Party called it a waste of money to hold the vote just five weeks before the November election.

Wonderling resigned on Tuesday. The second-term Republican is leaving to become chief executive of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. He's taking over the chamber post from former Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker.

The district includes parts of Bucks, Lehigh, Montgomery and Northampton counties.
