Police say the car had just left a gas station, and was heading south on Broad.
It suddenly picked up speed and crashed into the building.
The man driving the car was killed.
Rescuers cut a woman out of the wreckage. She is hospitalized in critical condition.
The building appeared to be vacant.
Officials are trying to determine if the driver might have suffered a medical problem at the time of the crash.
