Student offering tips for dog owners

SHARPSBURG, Pa. (AP) - December 21, 2009

Melanie Claus, a social work student at Carlow University, says some people would yell at her as she walked her dog, expecting that she might not clean up after the animal.

Claus says the fact that random strangers would yell out warnings even when her dog wasn't relieving himself suggests there's a problem with doggie doo etiquette.

That's why Claus has been distributing about 2,000 survey forms to residents in nearby Sharpsburg. She plans to turn the results into the borough's council in February so perhaps signs could be erected warning people to clean up after their pets.
