Shooting suspect surrenders after standoff

BENSALEM, Pa. - January 2, 2010

The incident began in Bristol Borough at around 2:00 a.m. when police say the suspect fired a handgun towards a patron at a local bar. Police secured two residences in Bristol evacuating neighboring homes to assure their safety. SWAT Team members searched both homes, but did not locate Rankins.

Then at around 7:30 a.m. investigations led to Holly Court in Bensalem where negotiators attempted to make contact with Rankins.

During the next 5 hours, negotiators attempted to convince Rankins to surrender on a warrant out of Bristol Borough, but he failed to keep communications open.

Once the SWAT team deployed diversion techniques, Rankins agreed to surrender. He was taken into police custody without incident.

Rankins will be arraigned later today by Bristol Borough Police on felony charges.

Bensalem Police are investigating the incident on Holly Court and could file additional charges.

Although the SWAT Team endured wind and freezing temperatures there were no injuries reported.
