Young boy killed in Wilmington hit and run

WILMINGTON - January 9, 2010

According to Wilmington police, a 16-year-old girl, who reportedly is the driver, is in their custody. Charges are pending.

Police say they received a call around 2:45 p.m. about a 9-year-old boy being pinned to car near 25th and Jessup Streets.

According to authorities, the boy was riding a Razor scooter when he was hit by a maroon Chevy.

The young boy was pinned to the vehicle, as the driver dragged the child for approximately two blocks before stopping.

The female driver then abandoned the child and the car at 23rd and Lamotte Streets.

Sgt. Mark Lemon of the Wilmington Police said he's been told there were others in the vehicle who also fled.

Neighbors tell Action News they tried to pull the boy out from under the car even before police arrived.

Authorities say the boy sustained serious head, chest and extremity injuries and was found in cardiac arrest upon their arrival. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members say the boy's grandfather was supervising the child at the time of the accident. Emergency crews took the man away by ambulance shortly after the boy was struck.
