Fire strikes historic armory in Center City

CENTER CITY - January 17, 2010

Fire alarms went off around 12:30 a.m. at the armory, located at 23 South 23rd Street, near the intersection of 23rd and Market Streets.

Crews were called to the scene. They entered the building, found a fire in a room on the second floor, and quickly went to work battling the flames. Additional firefighters were called in to assist before they were able to get the upper hand approximately 30 minutes later.

So far no injuries, no word yet on what sparked the fire.

The armory is the oldest armory in the United States and is headquarters of the First City Cavalry. The cavalry troop was organized in the 1700's to defend the colonies. Today, it is a private military organization serving the U.S.
