Local teachers honored as heroes

January 21, 2010

Alicia Conquest-Bulgin, a Spanish teacher at the School of the Future, reaches out to all the students. She coaches girl's basketball, volleyball and track and every other Thursday, she teaches Spanish lessons in an Autistic support classroom.

"Whenever I come and whatever I do, they're always into it, and a lot of them really retain a lot of it and it's really awesome," Conquest-Bulgin said.

"I'm no more a hero than any other teacher that's out there rolling their sleeve up," Samuel Reed said.

Reed teaches 6th grade English and social studies at Beeber Middle School. He sponsors the chess team and trains other teachers.

"It is tough work, but it's work that you love," Reed said.

It's his teaching that his students love.

"He teaches us a lot. It's a lot of stuff that I learned from Mr. Reed, I didn't know and I really thank him for that," 6th grader Evan Baylor said.

After teaching at Greaterford Prison, Bonnee Breese came to Overbrook High, and is now teaching students in Overbrook's "scholars Academy," a college preparatory class.

"I tell young people they are my future and just as much as they need me, I need them": Breese said.

And how they appreciate her.

"I think if any teacher in this building deserves it, Ms. Breese deserves it because she works really hard and we all see it," Academy Scholar Tara Jones said.

Bonnee Breese, Samuel Reed, Alicia Conquest- Bulgin are among the exceptional teachers from suburban Philadelphia and New Jersey are recipients of the annual "National Liberty Museum, Teacher As Hero" awards
