Ex-banker who attempted suicide sentenced

LANCASTER, Pa. - January 26, 2010

A Lancaster County judge sentenced 28-year-old George L. Clayton Jr. to one year of house arrest for stealing more than $300,000 from a bank in Manheim, about 25 miles east of Harrisburg. Investigators say Clayton also used customer information to obtain $900,000 in loans.

Clayton says guilt over the crimes drove him to jump off a bridge into the Susquehanna River in a suicide attempt. He later pleaded guilty to four counts each of identity theft and forgery and five counts of theft by deception.

Prosecutors say Clayton has received light treatment because of his suicide attempt.
