3-alarm fire displaces 60

STRAFFORD, Pa. - January 30, 2010

The fire broke out at around 9:30 a.m. at the Strafford Station Apartments.

The blaze quickly went through the 40-unit building, going to 3-alarms.

By the time firefighters from multiple companies on the Main Line could quench the blaze, at least 60 residents were thrust out into the cold, with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

"I just got out of the apartment as quickly as I could, I called 911, and grabbed what I could right in front of me and got out; the whole building got engulfed in flames and I'm sure everything is gone," fire victim Kristin Quigley said.

5 dozen fire victims are left try to cope with their sudden loss.

The landlord and the Red Cross are coordinating help for the victims. The landlord is putting the 60 victims up in local hotels. The Red Cross is paying for their immediate food and clothing needs.

Firefighters tell Action News it was a stroke of fortune that no one was killed or injured.

"The fire extended into the roof and then traveled the roofline horizontally from end to end…there was a fair amount of winding that was hampering our efforts a little bit," Chief Matt Norris of the Berwyn Fire Company said.

Despite their losses, the residents were hailing the quick response by the first responders, police and fire, who got them all out alive.

The fire marshal says the source of the accidental fire came from a second floor apartment, but no more information was revealed on the cause.
