Nutter discusses Phila.'s economic future

PHILADELPHIA - February 16, 2010

This, despite the ongoing, recession-driven budget crisis.

"Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia business community, are incredibly fortunate that Michael Nutter is our mayor," said David L. Cohen of Comcast.

The mayor came loaded with the kind of plans businesses like to hear, including pilot programs to streamline tax burdens for research and computer firms.

He also delivered a standard boilerplate on job creation.

"What city government can do, what we must do, first and foremost, is retain and attract the businesses that we have that do create jobs," Nutter said.

Despite some positive economic trends, the mayor warns that the city is still struggling with massive revenue shortfalls.

"It's going to take a while for that activity to catch up with our economic circumstance. We're nowhere near out of the woods," said Nutter.

The mayor faces a primary election in 14 months, and he's appears to be solidifying his support among Philadelphia's movers and shakers.
