Roses Discount Store opens in Northeast

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA - March 8, 2010

The store is located in the former National Wholesale Liquidators building in Rising Sun Plaza at Adams and Rising Sun avenues. And it's the first Philadelphia store to be opened by North-Carolina-based Variety Wholesalers.

"Probably, the best way to describe it is, if you're familiar with Kmart or Walmart, we're basically the same type of a store as that," explains Variety Wholesalers Vice President of Store Operations, Steve Swenson. He adds that the Roses store offers "All of the convenience without all the size."

Among the deals we found: Plus-size women's Church suits for $20, girls' puffy jackets for $5, and men's Wrangler jeans for $10.

But the store stocks more than clothes.

Pillows were two for $5, beach towels were three for $10, and an eight-piece Anchor bakeware set was also $10.

The store also sells packaged foods, furniture and electronics.

Latoi Griffin, who moved to Philadelphia from the South, says she'll be a Roses regular. "Roses is in South Carolina, so I'm very familiar with it," Griffin said. "We'll shop here all the time. My father was a big fan of Roses and we were really ecstatic to know that one was coming to Philadelphia."
