Brush fire consumes nearly 500 acres in south NJ

BARNEGAT, N.J. (AP) - March 21, 2010

The blaze was still burning Sunday, more than a day after it started. But officials say it should soon burn itself out.

No injuries have been reported in the blaze, which started Saturday afternoon in the Ocean County community Barnegat. The fire produced heavy smoke that forced officials to briefly evacuate the homes of about 60 people.

Dozens of firefighters remain on scene to douse hot spots and keep the blaze from spreading.

state Forest Fire Service Warden Bert Plante says the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
