Officer slashed, suspect shot dead in Phila.

PHILADELPHIA - March 26, 2010

Chopper 6 flew over the scene at 72nd and Greenway Avenue. The incident started around 7:30 p.m. when the officer, on a routine patrol, spotted a suspicous male and recognized the man from previous police incidents.

The details of those incidents were not immediately available.

Police say the officer pursued the suspect, who ran off. When the officer caught the suspect, the suspect slashed at the officer several times, cutting the officer's clothing and hitting his bullet-proof vest.

The officer then shot at the suspect, killing him. The suspect's identity has not yet been released.

The officer was driven by a fellow officer to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The officer was reported to be conscious and alert. Action News was on the scene as the officer was brought to HUP. Video appeared to show the officer getting out of a police cruiser with assistance before being put on a hospital bed and wheeled inside.

Authorities say the officer sustained only minor injuries.
