Officials weigh in on school/nightclub

WEST PHILADELPHIA - March 29, 2010

Philadelphia City Controller Alan Butkovitz will announce more findings into the school today, and Action News will be there.

Action News talked to state lawmakers about the controversy surrounding the charter school.

"This is why we have control in liquor control. The C stands for control. We don't' want it near the school," says State Rep. John Taylor, the Republican chairman of the House Liquor Control committee. He explained the charter school will be under heavy scrutiny in the coming weeks.

Monday night the superintendent of the Philadelphia School district called the situation unacceptable. Saying in a statement: "if this building is being used inappropriately and endangers the well-being of children, we will take immediate action to find an appropriate facility for the students."

Legislators add that it's not just the licensing that's an issue. They say it's the perception; what sort of message operating a club in a school is sending to students.

"I think it's' a big deal, that kids know it's a bar. There's a sign in the window, kids think it's okay," said State Rep. Taylor.

The school is adamant it has done nothing wrong, and has countered the club is in no way connected to the school except for having the same location. Officials for the school also add that proceeds from the bar benefit community programs.

But Philadelphia City Controller Alan Butkovitz explains that since the school gets over $3.5 million in taxpayer money per year, it can't operate by its own rules.

"This is not supposed to be a taxpayer subsidized base for a private enterprise not part of the school," Butkovitz said.

Action News will be there Tuesday when the controller announces more findings of his own investigation.
