Victim identified in Del. fatal plane crash

MIDDLETOWN, Del. - April 3, 2010

Phillip Lopez, 69, of North Wilmington has been identified as the pilot who was killed in the plane crash.

His wife, Patricia, also 69-years-old, is listed in critical condition at Christiana Hospital.

At around 6:40 p.m. Friday, New Castle County paramedics responded to the area of the 1400 block of Lorewood Grove Road near Summit Bridge Farms for the report of an aircraft down.

At that location, they found that a small airplane with two occupants had crashed.

The aircraft was found inverted and suspended off the ground by a wire.

Both Phillip and Patricia were trapped in aircraft.

Phillip sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Patricia was trapped in the wreckage for approximately 40 minutes before being extricated by personnel from Middletown and Odessa Fire Companies.

New Castle County paramedics treated her for chest and abdominal injuries.

She was flown to Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police helicopter.
