Construction zone crackdown on NJ highway

BELLMAWR, N.J. - April 6, 2010

There are numerous accidents due, in no small part, to aggressive driving. In fact, the number of accidents since the project started back in August has skyrocketed.

"There has been a 200 percent increase in motor vehicle crashes within the construction zone when you compare our 2009 data," said Maj. Louis Klock of the New Jersey State Police.

That's why the New Jersey State Police say it is cracking down with a zero-tolerance policy. A special squad is targeting aggressive drivers through the construction zone.

State police are using laser speed monitoring and unmarked patrol cars to enforce the law. The laser enables troopers to pinpoint a speeder 1,000 feet away with a very specific description of the car.

"They can't be distracted while driving through this area so that's why we're trying to send a very clear message of safety to slow down," said Capt. George Sabol.

That's why violators won't be warned, they will be ticketed. Fines through the zone are $170.
