Serial bank robbery suspect in custody

PHILADELPHIA - April 20, 2010

Sources tell Action News that Joseph Baer, 39, was apprehended while playing blackjack at the Trump Plaza Casino around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities had previously said that Baer was an avid gambler and was thought to be in the area of local casinos.

Baer has been charged with robbing approximately $1,000 from the PNC Bank in the 6800 block of Frankford Avenue on April 13th.

According to the criminal complaint filed by the FBI, Baer walked into the PNC Bank and said "I'll take your $100's, $50's and $20's. The teller asked Baer if he was making a withdrawal, to which he allegedly replied "This is a robbery."

The FBI said Baer is also a suspect in two other bank robberies: One on Monday at the Citizens Bank branch located at 2100 Cottman Avenue and the robbery of a TruMark Financial Credit Union at 1800 JFK back on Friday.

Baer was also wanted for escaping from a federal halfway house the day of the PNC Bank robbery.
