FDA may OK Provenge for prostate cancer

Washington, D.C.; April 26, 2010

The Food and Drug administration may approve a drug called Provenge...its the first-ever VACCINE for prostate cancer.

Provenge stimulates the body's own immune system to fight cancer cells.

Trials showed that although most men given the vaccine, lived just 4 and a half months longer, some gained an extra 2 to 3 years of life.

The FDA was expected to approve Provenge in 2007, but put off the final vote after critics said more information was needed on its benefits and risks.

And that move angered some activists, leading to threats against several criti

cs.
