U.S. Army Capt. Robert McDonough and 13 others from the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade will be honored for medical evacuation flights on April 2 involving German troops ambushed by Taliban fighters near Kunduz, Afghanistan.
The soldiers still are in Afghanistan and will receive Germany's Gold Cross in May.
His father, Jack, says McDonough piloted one of the two medical helicopters in the battle.
His family received a letter from an Army official saying the medevac team "performed heroically in the face of extreme adversity" and at least five German soldiers were saved by their actions.
