Specter-Sestak slugfest in the home stretch

PHILADELPHIA - May 16, 2010

In Philadelphia on Sunday, both Sen. Arlen Specter and Rep. Joe Sestak were expected to attend events at the Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church at 22nd and Tioga streets.

Arlen Specter was at the church on Sunday morning, meeting voters face-to-face. He said that turnout will be key for a victory on Tuesday.

"The black vote is critical, maybe decisive, and it's nice to have the endorsement of the black clergy, and the black clergy have supported me because of what I've done, such as saving the school lunch program in Philadelphia," Specter said.

Sestak is expected to arrive at Mt. Ephraim around 12:30 p.m. to talk about gun control.

Rep. Joe Sestak is challenging five-term Sen. Arlen Specter, who switched parties last year after 28 years as a GOP senator. The moderate Specter has been endorsed by President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party.

Sestak touched a nerve with rank and file Democrats with an attack ad reminding voters of Specter's links to the Bush administration. His message: Specter is not a true Democrat.

"I'm not a politician. I know that. Arlen has it head and shoulders above me. I respect the man, but it's just time. His time has come and gone, 30 years down there promoting the Republican agenda," Sestak said.

Specter's response: He parted ways with the GOP as the party moved right, and that his commitment remains focused on helping Pennsylvanians.

"There are potentially 125,000 jobs here," Specter said. "The job's not finished and I need another term in office to bring these 125,000 jobs to this region."
