Flash mob for peace in North Philadelphia

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - May 27, 2010

On Thursday it was those boys and girls who organized in the streets of North Philadelphia in a flash mob…for peace.

More than a thousand teens from five Catholic schools chanted "What do we want: Peace! When do we want it? Now!," as they marched down Lehigh Avenue.

"It is a flash mob for a positive reason. We believe in the kids, the students are our future and our hope," said Jeanne McGowan of the La Salle Academy.

"The message I want to tell to everyone is just think of other people," said fourth grader Alexander Torres.

The youngsters were students from St. Martin De Porres, Ascension of Our Lord School, St. Hugh of Cluny, La Salle Academy and Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Each group wore different colored shirts with the same symbol designed by eight grader Erica Zabala.

"Philadelphia is broken by violence and if we come together today we can bring our hearts together," Zabala said.

The Stand Across Lehigh Avenue peace march began four years ago during an explosion of violent crime in the city.

Sadly, there's still too much.

"A lot of crimes a lot of drugs in the area and the children are the best way to tell the people we need a place of peace," said Father Alexis Moronto of St. Hugh of Cluny.

There was plenty of solidarity and support from passersby.

The children just hope their message gets out.
