Philadelphia announces more budget cuts

PHILADELPHIA - June 2, 2010

Budget Director Stephen Agostini sent a letter to departments on Friday informing them of a 2 percent cut for the budget year that starts July 1. He also announced an immediate freeze on spending for supplies and equipment to save about $13 million.

Agostini cited lagging property tax revenues as a major factor in the latest cuts. He says those projections for this year are down $14 million.

The cuts come on the heels of $20 million in spending reductions announced by Mayor Michael Nutter last month. That was after city council rejected his push for either a tax on sugary drinks or a bigger property tax hike than the 9.9 percent increase they approved.
