Bear caught on tape in Lehigh Co. neighborhood

OREFIELD, Pa. - June 8, 2010

"I turned and looked and, sure enough, this bear goes running right across the street," said Tammy Gibson of Orefield, Pa., near Allentown. "So I ran in, got my husband and my son who got in the car and went after [the bear] with their camera."

Her family captured video of the bear running right outside their home inside the Green Hills Development in Orefield.

As you'd imagine though, the Gibsons weren't the only ones who signed on as local bear paparazzi. Cathy Seagreaves got a head-on shot of the animal as it made its way across her backyard.

"Pretty amazing because all the kids were around trying to track him down and it was the biggest news in the neighborhood for here in Green Hills," Seagreaves said.

Of course, when you're talking about a wild animal going through a residential area there's always the concern of someone, especially children, getting hurt.

But neighbors here say this bear was certainly not looking for all of this attention.

"I felt bad for it because it was definitely afraid and running from people, not towards people," Gibson said.

In the end, it was a 20 minute ordeal that these folks will be talking about for quite a while.

"We're from Utah, so we posted [the video] for our friends who live in Utah who don't see bears very often," said Gibson.

Officials want to remind anyone that if they see a bear not to approach it, but instead call animal control.
