Man test driving '53 Ford killed in head-on crash

NEWARK, Del. - June 9, 2010

David Carothers, 43, of Chesapeake City, Maryland died when the 1953 Ford Pickup he was driving was hit head-on by an SUV in Newark.

The crash happened around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday on Reybold Road near the Gray Acres development.

Police say Carothers was driving westbound on Reybold Road with the owner, a 70-year-old man from Middletown, riding in the passenger's seat.

The crash occurred, police say, when an SUV driven by Cecil Wright, 57, crossed the yellow line and hit the pickup head-on.

Carothers was ejected and died at the scene.

The passenger in the pickup was able to get out of the truck after it caught fire. He was taken to Christiana Hospital in stable condition.

Wright was trapped in his SUV until he could be rescued by firefighters.

Police say the crash is still under investigation and charges are pending.
