Hit-and-run victim honored for saving lives

NEWARK, N.J. - June 10, 2010

18-year-old Maria Pomavilla was killed in a hit and run crash back in April.

A tribute was held at her school to honor her and her family. The recipients of her organs also came to pay their respects and their gratitude.

Suzanne Gonzalez got a second chance at life, thanks to receiving Maria's liver.

"It's really bitter sweet because I feel for them losing their daughter, regardless of what they did," Gonzalez said.

Maria's brother says they learned about organ donation at school just weeks before his sister's death. He convinced the family to donate her organs.

"Out of that tragedy now five lives have been saved, as a direct result of the educational process," said Myra Burks-Davis of the N.J. Sharing Network.

Sadly, police still have not caught the driver in the hit and run accident.
