Woman assaulted while jogging in N.J. park

WEST AMWELL TWP., N.J.. - July 5, 2010

The Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office says the assault occurred around 8:00 p.m. on July 1st.

The jogger was accosted and dragged off the path into a wooded area where she was physically assaulted.

Police say no weapon was used in the assault.

The attacker is described as a Hispanic male with short brown hair, standing approximately 5'8" tall and weighing between 140-160 pounds. He was dressed in a dark colored shirt.

It is believed that the suspect was sitting on a bench as the victim passed by and then following the assault, fled the scene by running south along the towpath.

The severity of the victim's injuries have not been specified.

Authorities want to remind all individuals using the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park towpath to exercise caution:

  • Tell a family member or friend where they are going and when they are expected to return
  • Carry a cellular telephone if possible
  • Stay alert and be observant of their surroundings
  • Avoid areas where visibility is poor
  • Walk or jog with a partner
  • Report any suspicious activity or behavior to law enforcement authorities
