Man arrested in violent attempted carjacking

NEWARK, Del. - July 22, 2010

Michael Head, 40, of the 200 block of Kirkwood Highway, has been charged with the attack on a 61-year-old woman.

The attack happened around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in the Brookside Shopping Center.

Police say the victim had just parked her car and was walking to the Happy Harry's store when she was approached by Head, who asked if she could give him a ride to a nearby gas station.

Head then asked her for money, police said, then became combative when she refused. Head allegedly tried to grab her keys and a struggle ensued. Fortunately, police say two female bystanders witnessed the attack and helped the victim.

Police identified Head as a suspect, and executed a search warrant at his home on Wednesday. In his home police say they found what appeared to be blood-stained clothing that was worn during the attempted carjacking.

Head has been charged with attempted carjacking and felony assault. He has been arraigned and committed to the Howard Young Prison after failing to post $33,000 secured bail.
