Ex-Philly councilman's son admits throat slashing

PHILADELPHIA - September 20, 2010

Joseph Vignola Jr., 21, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and related charges in court on Monday morning.

He is free on bail pending sentencing on November 3rd.

The assault happened at the North American Motor Inn on City Avenue back in May, 2008.

Prosecutors said Vignola choked the woman, who was 18 at the time, until she was unconscious, cut her throat and left her for dead.

Vignola initially claimed an intruder was responsible for the attack, but later confessed to the crime.

The woman survived the attack.

Vignola is the son of former city councilman and controller Joseph Vignola.
