NJ neighborhood on the lookout for bears

WEST AMWELL, N.J. - September 20, 2010

It all started when Barry Breech looked across the street from his home in West Amwell, New Jersey on Sunday evening to see a black bear walking across his neighbor's lawn.

Just in case no one would believe him, he snapped a pictured.

"He was just ambling toward the woods," said Barry's wife, Jackie. "My husband went out on our front steps with our dog to try to get her to bark and just scare it into the woods or away from the area where people live. It turned and looked at him but then proceeded on into the woods."

It was George Tilton's yard the bear was walking through.

"Wonderful people in this neighborhood, but we didn't expect a bear!" Tilton said. "We would like not to have to worry about sitting on the back porch."

The Breeches sent an email out to notify neighbors and word of the bear is getting around - which is making everyone just a little extra cautious when they're outdoors.

Julie Smith walks her dog twice a day, but now does it in the middle of the road. And she's going to temporarily ban her kids from playing in their fort in the woods.

"We'll be saying 'Look, until we know for sure let's not play in the woods," Smith said. "I just don't know what else to do."

There have been several bear sightings in this area around the old Music Mountain over the last several months.
