Del. faces illegal parties in vacant homes

NEWARK, Del. (AP) - September 21, 2010

This summer, residents of the Timber Farm neighborhood of $350,000 homes near Newark were alarmed when one vacant home drew more than 100 people for a party that was promoted online. Later that night, a 20-year-old man at the party was shot.

Civic association president Bruce Lipphardt says a second party was planned at the same home less than a week later.

Police say party organizers tour homes and leave doors or windows unlocked. Then they break in and host a party, sometimes causing thousands of dollars in damage.

New Castle County Councilman David Tackett is drafting a measure to register vacant properties.
