Delco school board member facing theft charges

MEDIA, Pa. - November 8, 2010

He took money from children - that is what law enforcement officials in Delaware County are saying about 48-year-old John Green.

The former Penn Delco School Board member is charged with stealing more than $16,000 from the Sun Valley Sportsters. He was treasurer of the organization, which supports female athletes in the Penn Delco School District. The girls pay out of their own pockets to the Sportsters club, which throws a yearly awards banquet.

The District Attorney Michael Green (no relation) says John Green used the club's money as his own bank account.

"John Green used the Sun Valley Sportsters club, essentially, to subsidize his personal expenses," said the District Attorney. "He abused the trust placed in him by the Penn Delco School District and the young athletes."

John Green was initially arrested on the charges two years ago, but he hired a forensic accountant, who concluded that any money that went to Green from the Sportsters club was to reimburse him for bills he paid out of his own pocket. Charges were withdrawn pending a review by the D.A.'s office. That review is complete and the charges have been re-filed.

Green is now charged with multiple felony counts of theft in addition to a number of related offenses.

This investigation is ongoing. Green was also treasurer of at least two other non-profit organizations that law enforcement knows of, and they will be looking at those organizations and examining his financial dealings there.
