Mother of two killed in Cheltenham hit and run

CHELTENHAM, Pa. - February 3, 2011

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. at Cheltenham Avenue near East Mt. Airy Avenue.

Authorities say a woman was struck and killed while attempting to cross a stretch of Cheltenham Avenue.

The operator of the striking vehicle sped off and remains at large.

"The only description of the operator is a black male wearing a tan jacket," Lt. Joseph Gruver of the Cheltenham Police said.

Family members say the victim, a mother of two, worked at the Walmart in the Cedarbrook Plaza where the accident happened.

They say she just left work and think she may have been crossing the street to get something to eat.

Tia Robinson watched as innocent bystanders rushed to render aid to the victim. "It's sad. They tried to help her for a while, a couple innocent people pulled over to try and help her, by then, some cops came and they were trying to help her as well, doing CPR," Robinson said.

"We're trying to identify any other witnesses that may have seen things. We have one, at this point that is the only thing we have to go on," Gruver said.

The investigation resulted in partial closure of Cheltenham Avenue in that area.

Police believe the striking vehicle may be a gray 4-door, possibly a Buick LaSabre.

Police have not released the victim's identity as of yet.
